Capstone Planning & Blueprint

Choosing a capstone track, the project charter, safe data ethics and prototype v0.1.

⌨️ Start with your 10-minute typing warm-up

By the end, you will be able to:

  • Explain the capstone using the "building the whole house" analogy: separate tools (Word, Excel, slides, Scratch) combine into one solution.
  • Choose one manageable track (A, B, C or D) and describe a real school or community problem in clear sentences.
  • Explain what a prototype (v0.1) is, using the cardboard model house.
  • Use only realistic, simulated data and no real phone numbers, addresses or financial records.
  • Create Capstone_[TeamName] with Drafts and Final_Showcase subfolders and save a correctly named v0.1 file, such as Capstone_v0.1_CleanWater.docx.

Your path ·

Follow these steps in order

Tick each step when you finish it. Your ticks are saved on this device, so you can stop and come back later.

  1. Learn the plan ⏱️ 25 min

Read pages 1–3 of the workbook: how a real project is planned, and the four project tracks.

    📖 Open the workbook
  2. Fill in your project canvas ⏱️ 20 min

With your team, complete the project canvas on page 4, including a role for every member.

    📖 Open page 4
  3. Explore the 3D lab ⏱️ 15 min

Play with the 3D model below. The 🎯 missions tell you exactly what to do next. When you finish every mission, this step ticks itself.

Go to the 3D lab ↓
  4. Set up your project folder ⏱️ 20 min

Do the Lab Mission on page 5 on a real computer: make your project folder and save your first v0.1 file.

    📖 Open page 5
  5. Check yourself ⏱️ 10 min

Work through the Milestone 1 checklist on page 6 with your team.

    Finished? Check your answers

There are no questions with a single correct answer this session.

Question 1 (why build a rough prototype first?): Look for: it lets you test whether the idea makes sense quickly, before spending hours on colours and animations; you find problems early when they are easy to fix; others can see the size and shape of the idea, like the architect's cardboard model.

Question 2 (one challenge in Session 43 and how to solve it): Look for: a realistic challenge (power cut, file lost, formula errors, a sprite that won't move, team disagreement, running out of time) with a concrete solution (save often, keep files in the Drafts folder, use the debugging steps, share roles, keep the project small).

Milestone 1 checklist: all four boxes should be honestly ticked before the mentor signs. The second box now means all 7 canvas boxes, including Team Roles.

  6. Rate yourself and save your work ⏱️ 5 min

Tick how confident you feel on the last page, then press 🖨 Print / Save as PDF in the workbook to keep a copy. On a shared computer, press Clear my answers when you have saved it.

🎉 Session 42 complete!

Brilliant work. Next up: Session 43: Capstone Building, Testing & Iteration.

🏠 Build the Whole House

Each capstone step builds part of a 3D house: charter, prototype, testing and polish. Then practise your timed 3-minute pitch on the Demo Day stage. Saved between sessions. Follow the 🎯 missions on the right: they tell you what to do next.

Stuck? Try this

📖 Read it again, slowly

Most problems are one missed word. Look for the Panic Button or Help box in the workbook.

🧊 The 3D lab won't load?

Refresh the page. On a very old computer it may not show 3D. The workbook still has everything you need.

💾 My answers disappeared?

Answers save on the computer you typed them on. Open the workbook on that same computer and browser.

🤝 Still stuck?

Ask your mentor, a teacher or a friend. Show them the step number you are on.
